X-Aspirations Is My Favorite Australian Record Ever

Updated: 1/15/08: Well, the post was full of lies, Lies, LIES! A friendly reader brought brought them to my attention, and not surprisingly he was dead on. Here’s what he said,

“The singer of X did NOT bail !! His name is Steve Lucas. He plays guitar AND does the vocals on X-Aspirations,as well as all X albums. If you listen to the `Home is where the floor is` clip, you can hear two voices.Lucas is the main vocalist, and does the scream/shriek before the `lead break`.Ian Rilen sings the backing vocals.”

There you have it, and after re-reading the insert i have from the LP it turns out the second guitar player was the bozo who bailed right before recording of what was supposed to be a single, but turned into the album. Lucas said that his guitar playing was in part trying to compensate for the loss and to  keep up the ace rhythm section. So there you have it. Thanks Sean!!!!

Obviously not the same porno reading bozos from LA. For my money Australian X wipes the floor with LA X, not that it is in any way a crime to like them both, but i bring it up because they were both late seventies punk bands who have pretty dedicated cult followings. If there’s any Rose Tattoo fans out there, the late Ian Rilen was a key member of this rough little outlet, actually taking over lead vocal duties just days before recording this whole album after the band’s front man lost interest and bailed. I know little factoids like that are really nerdy but it’s pretty interesting to figure that something like your lead singers quitting days before you are supposed to record your hit album would seem like a pretty big problem but somehow it was probably the best thing that could have happened and actually was pretty integral in boosting this album from good to great, completely serendipitously. Rilen’s vocals are unpolished and as raw as some marsupial butchered on the hood of your car speeding through a back road outside of Melbourne. But what really does it for me is the killer rhythm section that undeniably propels this band into greatness

Don’t Miss This Album.

Thanks for making this album available– it’ll tide me over until I can mug some schoolkid and buy the actual record… I’ll leave the war of taste between X and X or X and The Saints alone (incidentally there was a pretty popular Japanese band that used the moniker as well) but I will say that another band who recorded their debut album on a new singer was The Radiators (From Outer Space) which I think you should check out… Guitarist Phil Chevron (later of The Pogues) took over on the mic on “TV Tube Heart” with original singer Stephen Rapid only appearing on the song “Enemies”… It’s a shame about the muted production but their second album was completely destroyed by Tony Visconti so it could’ve been worse…

Yeah, the record is out there, having been repressed within the last decade, so with a bit of luck you might find it for chump change. Besides, you have your luck with records, you’re the only one i know sitting on a copy of Where Birdmen Flew. Also there is always talk of another pressing.
Ethan played the Radiators for me a few times, they were a Chiswick band, yeah? I always meant to track down more from them, maybe this second recommendation will get me to do it this time.

    X=X-(XxX)

now solve for the variable of X

If I could perform algebraic calculations I would have been in the electricians union instead of working at Amoeba… Okay, actually if I could pass an interview with five people I would be, but I digress…

Radiators were a Chiswick band but less pub rock like most of their releases, more frenetic than The Gorillas or Count Bishops and light on covers…

While I’m not opposed to repressings (if done well) there are certain things which are important enough to seek out the real deal Holyfield and this might be one… That first Scientists album would be nice too…

I saw X play live in `90. X live were SOMETHING to behold,I`m tellin ya.If you like what you`ve heard so far,YOU MUST GET the 8July 1978 live CD. Two questions… 1.Where can I get a vinyl copy of the `Home is where the floor is` EP ,if such a thing exists? I`ve been into this band for years,I need a copy. 2.I heard that Ian Rilen passed away.Very sad news. I wasn`t aware Cath Synnerdahl had died. She joined after Cathy Green(2nd drummer) left, and plays on the `I love rock&roll`EP as well as the 25th Anniversary shows /double live CD. What a band!

just to let anyone know, the ‘home is where the floor is’ “EP” is now actually an EP. X pressed it as a 7″ + the song ‘good on you baby’ for their recent tour with Flipper.
only 500 were pressed and as far as i know all / most are hand numbered / personal messaged at the time of selling. i somehow ended up with number one. good luck getting your hands on a copy. i wanted to buy 10 copies to sell, but steve didn’t understand the concept of ‘online store’ and just gave me an extra for ‘your radio show’….
who was i to argue. the man is one of the largest humans i’ve ever met. absolutely huge. wide and tall. he was weaing skin tight red flares, pink shoes, X ripped t-shirt, tiger print scarf and belt, fur knee length overcoat, makeup, lipstick, and had long streaked hair. looked like a pro wrestler in drag.
he played the set with the bottle cap off a beer bottle as a guitar pick.

I and my buddies came reading the nice tactics on your web page and quickly came up with an awful suspicion I had not expressed respect to the website owner for those techniques. All of the ladies are actually totally stimulated to read them and now have in reality been making the most of those things. We appreciate you really being very considerate and also for using this form of perfect subject areas millions of individuals are really eager to understand about. My honest regret for not expressing gratitude to you sooner.

May I simply say what a relief to discover someone who actually knows what
they’re talking about on the internet. You certainly know
how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people should check this out and understand this
side of your story. It’s surprising you’re
not more popular because you most certainly have the gift.
